As we get older, our skin’s natural exfoliation process slows down considerably and dark spots begin to surface on our skin. These spots are the result of years of sun damage coupled with environmental factors. But there is hope and in fact, there are multiple different ways to lighten skin from using over the counter creams such as fade cream to more invasive but effective cosmetic procedures.
Fade Cream – these are over the counter creams which help lighten skin and dark spots on the skin. They come in gels or creams and are very effective. Advantage: They can start to show effects rather quickly. Disadvantage: They can be harsh and many people become irritated by the chemicals. Creams which contain natural plant extracts as opposed to hydroquinone or other harsher chemicals would be a good solution. Hydroquinone is found in many over the counter creams but it can be harsh and some skin types are simply too sensitive for this ingredient. However, it is very effective in lightening dark spots rather quickly when used in moderation. Best bet is to always test a small patch of skin first regardless of which type of fade cream or gel you purchase. This will enable you to see any irritation or allergic reactions from the ingredients on your skin before applying it to larger areas.
Skin Peels and Laser Treatments: If the damage is more severe, then you may want to opt for a more invasive but very effective cosmetic procedure. Skin peels and laser treatments will help to even out the skin tone and lighten dark areas that are too deep or uneven to effectively be lightened by over the counter products. Advantage: The results are immediately recognizable. Disadvantage: These procedures should always be done by a licensed professional with a proven track record of success and safety when performing these types of procedures. When choosing a doctor or licensed professional it is crucial to do your due diligence to be sure you are not left with scarring or permanent damage to your skin.
Natural Remedies: Lemon Juice is a great natural skin lightener when combined with other ingredients. Combining lemon juice with honey, cucumber or yogurt are all effective natural ways to lighten skin. Advantage: Using natural remedies will be a slower process but a safer way than using a fade cream or cosmetic procedure. Disadvantage: These types of remedies are not as effective and not recommended for deep scarring or more severe damage.
Whichever option you choose always be sure to do your research up front and understand the consequences and side effects of each. The best bet is to avoid this damage by starting early and often by using preventative measures such as a sun block with an SPF of 15 daily. Usage of a sunblock every day will help to prevent any damage the sun causes which will come out as dark, uneven blotches on your skin as you age. As they say, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
But if the damage has already been done, using any of the above methods will work as long as you follow instructions, heed warnings and do your due diligence when researching a solution. Today, there is no reason to suffer with unsightly blemishes or dark spots any longer.
